The environmental group is targeting Piccadilly Circus on the third day of climate protests in central London.

Extinction Rebellion protesters glued themselves to Selfridges in Oxford Street on the group’s second day of climate demonstrations.

XR members wanted to raise awareness of the fashion industry’s emissions record and held a banner declaring: “Fashion is addicted to dirty oil”.

Animal Rebellion also targeted McDonald’s with a ‘McSleep-in’ in Leicester Square and XR Cymru blocked a road outside HMRC in a bid to persuade the government not to bank with Barclays.

The Impossible Rebellion demonstrations are focused on XR’s demand that the UK government stops all new fossil fuel investment immediately. They are set to last two weeks.

On Wednesday protesters are heading to Piccadilly Circus and the group is also targeting the Brazilian embassy to protest the environmental destruction of the Amazon Rainforest and the country’s treatment of its indigenous people.

Tuesday also saw the end of The Table, a giant pink structure erected in Covent Garden to symbolise the group inviting the government to “come to the table”. Police, who have made 118 arrests over the first two days of protests, tore it down within 24 hours.

Ahead of the latest demonstrations, XR co-founder Clare Farrell said: “We are in the midst of a collective act of global, social evil which is unprecedented in all of history.

“We spend more time measuring it than trying to stop it. This is in and of itself a crime.

“Mass movements can create rapid change and we are in open rebellion until we see real action.

“The UK has a duty to set a good example and other countries will follow. People want to live, but we need leadership and it’s nowhere to be seen. So join us, and we will be the leaders we need. Disobey the system that is killing life on earth.”
