Last night, Big Issue Foundation staff member Rhia Docherty was announced as a winner of a Rising Star Award in the field of Sport. The Rising Star awards were introduced by WeAreTheCity in 2015 to showcase the UK pipeline of female talent below management level and to create female role models across different industries and professions. Rhia has received this award in recognition of her work within the field of Professional Wrestling.
Originally from Northern Ireland, Rhia completed wrestling training in both England and Canada before settling in London. Since then she has wrestled for promotions across the UK as well as in Europe, the US and Canada. Rhia continues to help build a wrestling community which accepts women as equals and has helped inspire more women to take up wrestling and go above and beyond what they have ever expected. She is currently the spokesperson for the Pro Wrestling Eve – a live feminist, punk rock, all female, underground pro wrestling show that runs out of the “Resistance Gallery” in Bethnal Green, London.
Vanessa Vallely, MD of WeAreTheCity said “Once again the response to the Rising Star awards has been amazing, both in terms of the amount of nominations received and the calibre of entries. We know there is an amazing amount of female talent across the UK and it gives us such pleasure to be able to shine a light on these women’s achievements through our awards.”
