Big Issue Foundation

Kathryn’s Story

I work as a fundraiser for The Big Issue Foundation and took part in the London to Paris ride last year as the charity’s rep.  My boyfriend Jonathan signed up to ride too and we both really enjoyed the four day trip. It was a really challenging ride, each of the three days was difficult in different ways, but I felt a great sense of satisfaction after each of them as I lay on my bed with my legs throbbing!

We both enjoyed setting and meeting the challenge, but something was missing (for Jonathan more than me I have to say!). Having done well with our training and getting up to 81 miles on one of the days on the way over to Paris, he was keen to hit the target of riding 100 miles in a day. I thought I might as well give it a go too!

I knew that I would be taking part in The Big Issue’s ride from London to Amsterdam in 2015, but that the maximum would be 75 miles a day on that trip.  So, we signed up to The Big Issue Foundation’s team and took part in RideLondon 100, cycling 100 miles in a day from Olympic Park and out to the Surrey Hills and back. We didn’t manage to find as much time to train for that as we did for London to Paris last year, but we did ok!  Jonathan completed the course in just over 7 hours and I was 7 hours 35 minutes. Having closed roads made such a difference and some (although not all) of the miles flew by. I just needed reminding as we cycled home that I had to stop for red lights again!

So it’s London to Amsterdam next and we’re excited about another challenge!  I’m hoping that I have kept hold of some of my fitness from the Ride 100, and am looking forward to the gently undulating route, and having a great group of people to cycle with. With just one week to go we have just one more training ride to go, and then it’ll be time to pack up and get peddling! My top packing tip from the London to Paris? Glucose tablets and big water bottles, along with really comfy and warm clothes for the evening!

Every copy counts this Christmas

Your local vendor is at the sharp end of the cost-of-living crisis this Christmas. Prices of energy and food are rising rapidly. As is the cost of rent. All at their highest rate in 40 years. Vendors are amongst the most vulnerable people affected. Support our vendors to earn as much as they can and give them a fighting chance this Christmas.
