On Tuesday 28th November, the world celebrated #GivingTuesday – the global day of giving – and The Big Issue Foundation got involved!
As ever, #givingtuesday dominated social media, becoming the top trend on Twitter in the UK from 8.30am and staying there for most of the day. Globally, the day received over 1 million social mentions resulting in over £200 million being donated to charities in over 150 countries!
We got involved by launched our first ever Thunderclap – a way to get lots of supporters to post the same message at the same time on social media – a little bit like an online flashmob! We got 140 of you to sign up to post a tweet or Facebook post meaning the message of #AHandUpNotHandOut reached over 650,000 people!
Everywhere across the globe people also got involved by spreading the message of their favourite charities and causes, giving up their time to help out and even organising their own events.
We coordinated two station collections at Shoreditch High Street Overground station in London with the help of some eager volunteers which resulted in commuters digging deep to give us their spare change.
A combination of these activities enabled us to raise over £1,600 on #GivingTuesday to support our work helping Big Issue vendors rebuild their lives. Thank you to everyone who got involved by giving their money, their time and their social media posts!
