We need you to #StepAgainstTheStorm after cancellation of Big London Night Walk

We are calling on supporters to #StepAgainstTheStorm with us after Storm Emma and The Beast from the East forced the cancellation of two of major fundraising events for The Big Issue Foundation on Friday.

Both the Big London Night Walk and The Bristol Sleep Out were called off on 2nd March after severe snow storms hit the capital and the South West last week. The fundraising events were due to make over £100,000 for The Big Issue Foundation, vital funds towards our support work with Big Issue vendors.

Stephen Robertson, CEO of The Big Issue Foundation, said

“The extreme weather conditions that led to the cancelation of these two events were absolutely tragic. Having completed each and every one of our previous night walks and many many sleep outs I know just how vital they are to our work and the enormous amount of effort and energy our wonderful supporters commit to them and to their fundraising efforts. I am heartened to see that people have gone on to complete their own challenges and hope that this appeal will also go some way to helping us make up that shortfall that has happened as a result. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in any way with these activities. The events were cancelled for health and safety reasons but our work goes on.”

The snow may have forced cancellation of these events, but our important work must continue! We are asking you to #StepAgainstTheStorm with us by signing up to The Big Step Challenge and walking 10,000 steps a day from 12th-25th March 2018.

Once participants sign up for £5 they can find out more about tracking their steps and create a profile on our virtual community of walkers who are all aiming to raise £100 each to support our work.

We have been delighted by the continued support from all of our events participants since Friday, some who went on to brave the elements and take of their own walks closer to home. Steve Dew took on the South Downs for his 14 mile challenge, whilst Kate and Jeff Towerzey took to the Lee Valley for a wintery walk.

“It has been a good experience for us to push our level of fitness and walk further than we would normally, especially in the winter time” Kate Towerzey

Participants who were unable to complete their challenge on Friday have been offered to transfer their place to a future event, as well as taking on The Big Step Challenge this March.

If you aren’t able to step up to a challenge, you can still make a donation to our #StepAgainstTheStorm appeal today.
