"Hero" vendor shares incredible story of survival

Jane told The Big Miss You Podcast how she has stayed strong through disability, anorexia, depression, domestic abuse and addiction

Wimbledon Big Issue vendor Jane Burns has shared her incredible story of resilience and survival with The Big Miss You Podcast.

The victim of a horrific road accident back in the 1980s – which means that she now gets around in a wheelchair – Jane has battled her injuries, as well as anorexia, depression, domestic abuse and addiction. She has found support through The Big Issue and her dog Cassie.

Her customers call her a hero.

“There was something that kept me alive,” Jane told the podcast. “I’m too goddamn strong, I think. I’ve just got this life energy in me.”

Jane’s regular customer, retired teacher Jane Blackmore, said that she enjoys her conversations with Jane. She has been missing Jane, and wanted to pass on her best wishes.

“I think of her quite a lot, and hope that she can keep her spirits up. I admire her so much. She’s one of my heroes,” Blackmore added.
