Jimmy, a well-known face on the streets of East London, died at the beginning of the month aged 56

We are saddened to announce that popular Big Issue vendor Jimmy McMahon has died.

Jimmy sold the magazine for more than a decade around East London, and struck up a strong relationship with regular customers while selling in Covent Garden thanks to his love of art and poetry.

The Big Issue had supported Jimmy in his battle against alcohol addiction for a number of years. He passed away at the start of June aged 56.

Lauren Neale, The Big Issue’s sales and operations manager in London, paid tribute to the popular seller and will retain fond memories Jimmy for years to come.

She said: “Jimmy was a real character, kind-hearted and would give his last pound to someone in need. He was a talented poet and artist, known for his trademark red hat and squeezing the word “buddy” in to every sentence.

“He will be greatly missed by vendors, franchisees and staff. It truly was a privilege to know Jimmy.”

Jimmy is the second vendor to die this month following the tragic loss of Eric Cullen. Neither death was due to the coronavirus. The Big Issue will continue to support vendors throughout the Covid-19 crisis.
